Create Transition Not Working

My corridor transitions from wider to narrower and I'm using the Create Transition tool but it does not work instead it just connects it with no transition.  The templates are exactly the same except for the width but I can't make it work.

I've resorted to using Point Controls to manage the transition because I can't make this work. I've done transitions on Inroads Roadway designer with no problem but can't do it on ORD.

  • ChrisMat,

Without seeing a screen shot of what's happening, I have 3 thoughts.

    1) How far apart are the Template drops from each other? Is there at least some station distance between the end of the first template and the beginning of the second? I believe there needs to be a gap in there for the transition to fill.

    2) Are the templates LITERALLY the same template? Meaning you dropped the same template but made some Corridor Template Edits (the widths) to the second one? If that's the case, I don't believe ORD will allow you to "transition" to the same exact template, regardless of whether the second one has a different width. If this is the case, go into the ITL and copy/paste the template and rename the pasted one. Change the widths there and then swap out the 2nd template in the corridor with the new one.

    3) Are you sure the 2 template drops are in the same Corridor? I've had students that created a new corridor for the second template drop by accident and ORD won't let you transition between 2 different corridors.

  • Thanks for the reply Joe.

The template drops have a 40m gap.

This is the result after Create Transition command.

This is a snapshot of the Edit template transition window.

The template drops have 2 separate templates, with 2 unique names.  All points in the templates are named exactly the same, with only the width that has changed. And the templates belong in the same corridor.  Below is a snapshot of the Corridor Objects Template Drops

  • ChrisMat,

Ok, so the solution here is that there are Horizontal constraints on the points that are supposed to be transitioning to the different width.

Get back into the Transition Editor (as shown in your last screen shot) and click OK. You will likely get a warning dialog box stating that in order for the transition to work properly, some constraints may need to be released. Click OK to dismiss that dialog. Then on the next screen Right-click on the point that needs to move horizontally (looks like one on each side of the centerline) and select Delete Horizontal Constraint. Use the slider at the bottom of the dialog to confirm the points now transition horizontally.

    That should do it.
