What is the difference between an Error and a Warning in Civil Message Center?

When applying DOT design standards, warnings and errors both tell the user that DOT design standards has been violated.  I do not understand the need to differentiate them.  Can someone please explain the difference between an Error and a Warning in ORD's Civil Message Center please?

    The Civil Message Center consists of four types of messages:

    MicroStation - duplicates all messages that MicroStation shows in its own message center

    Errors - displays severe problems found in the Civil tools that need attention

    Warnings - displays less severe errors that should be investigated

    Messages - displays informational messages about the Civil tools



  • Hey David: The difference in Errors and Warnings is:

    For design standards:

    • A warning is logged if the geometric value exceeds the default value of the design standard. For example, the default curve radius is 200 and you define the radius to be 190.  You'll note that (in most cases) a parameter less than the default value is still allowable but perhaps not recommended since most design standards are defined to set the default somewhere in the middle of allowable values.
    • An error is logged when the geometric parameter is less than the defined minimum, IE it is not allowable.

    For geometry in genera: An error is logged if you change the geometric element or its reference elements in such a way that the feature can no longer solve. In this case, the geometry will also display on screen as a heavy dashed red line.

    For drainage design:

    • A warning is logged for any hydraulic results which exceed the defined design constraints or some other hydraulic threshold such as excessive velocity. The severity may be allowable or disallowed. The designer must determine this.
    • An error is logged when the hydraulic inputs present an unsolvable situation. These are referred to as validation errors on the drainage side of ORD. In other words the hydraulic formulae become invalid. The hydraulic calcs will stop until the errors are resolved.
