Vertical geometry

Hi,

I am a bit new to OpenRoads designer and kindly need to know what exactly the aim is for creating a vertical geometry to be able to create cross sections afterwards. In civil 3D for instance, it is enough to create an alignment through a certain surface and then create cross sections to include the elevation data of this surface. When I am trying to do the same in ORD by drawing a horizontal geometry, I notice that, the alignement is not located in the same level as that of the surface which I wanna include in my sections. Is this then the purpose of drawing the vertical geometry in ORD, that is to adjust the levels of the alignment?

Many thanks,

Mamdouh

  • Hi Mamdouh,

I assume you have just jumped in and skipped any training? All good, but note that ORD is designed to work in seperate 2d-3d models, so you start with a 2d seed and when you activate a terrain or an active profile, it will create a linked 3d model. This makes the models much tidier and organised IMO.

I'm guessing you are seeing your 2d geometry at elevation zero if you are working in a 3d only DGN. Use the Profile from Surface command to get a profile of a surface and once you make it active you will see new 3d geometry that follows this surface.

    Regards,

  • Many thanks for the answer Mark. In fact yes, I just skimmed the training material without spending so much time on them, it was not smart perhaps. So now I get it. the right way to do it is to start with 2D seed and get into the 3D model.

  • You really will not have to get into the 3D model for anything. All of that design is generated by the program as you work in the 2D model views. Horizontal geometry is created, then a Profile View is opened from there to design the vertical alignment. This is where you would use the Profile from Surface tool Mark mentioned - the Profile View from the 2D model.
