Annotate vertical geometry in plan

Hello,

I'm trying to annotate vertical geometry in plan view in openroads. In Inroads there was a dedicated tool for that that created lines indicating ahead and back grade which were scaled according to proposed grade, so if there was a high grade the line was steep in relation to its vertical leader line (which were perpendicular to the centerline).

I'm trying to recreate such tool in openroads using annotation group but i cannot find a way to create this automatically slanting lines. I got to annotating ahead and back grade but can't go any further. Is it possible to do?
I have attached a screen. On the left is the stage where i'm at, on the right is the effect which i want to obtain. So slanted line and slanted label with grade scaling according to the value of ahead or back grade.

  • you want to annotate in vertical points with VPI Symbology and then adjust the settings of the VPI Symbology

BUT BEWARE. There are bugs. for one the ahead and back slope lables return false values. This happenes for sure as soon as there are slopes over 10%, and probably otherwise too. So make sure you check with your profile.

Also the rotation of the "gallows?" and their beams (your red elements) are allover the place when your alignement doesn't strictly go left to right.

The whole vertical in plan annotation is in a pretty sad state...

  • Well it did figure it should work like that, but it didn't, at least not in my openroads version. It produces lines which do not correspond with proposed grades and even if it did correspond i have no way to annotate it like i used to in InRoads. It doesn't work in my version even for small slopes <5%. Out of curiosity, what version of OpenRoadsDesigner do you use?

  • the latest. the slanting of your beams would be controlled by the leader line exaggeration value. the text you should be able to get it aligned with the beams. i don't remember where to set that up from the top of my head though.

could it be that you don't have vertical curvature in your VPIs? because that then doesn't work either. and (without being able to confirm it) if you have a vpi with an edge, then afterwards all the leader lines would draw at the same grade as the ones before.

hard to figure out what's not working due to having it set up wrong and what's not working due to one of the many bugs present.

what i find unacceptable is returning wrong values. we have reported that at least 1 mayor version back. and it's still in there, undocumented and producing faulty drawings....

things like that destroy all trust in the software, and if we must start double checking generated annotations we can as well go back to microstation and paint with lines and arcs....

  • Thank you for your reply. Yes, i do have vertical curvature in profile as well as vertices without curves.

I couldn't agree more. Right now I'm like 99% sure that this is a faulty software bug. Maybe after update it will work.
Once again thank you for your help.
