Curve widening on tangent

I have a bunch of roadways where through a certain station the road with be widend as shown in red. Could I set up a curve widening table such that I can type the station range and InRoads Roadway designer can set my widening control points. Currently I am using parametric contraints but I have to do 3 constraints, one for the beginning taper, one for full widening, and one for the end taper. Can the table work as sometime the widening is on curve, sometimes tangent and sometimes a combination. Thanks.

  • Brian,

Here is a suggestion: Instead of using widening and parametrics, have you considered taking the plan layout graphics that define the areas requiring widening and import them as a discontinuous alignment. (Widening Lt or Widening Rt). Then use either a style constraint or a point control to automatically modify the typical based on these widened areas.

  • I thought a little. I have 130 centerline alignments so added that many more alignment would get a bit confusing. I could think about using a style control but I don't know much about that. I will have to read up on it. Can I use style control right in my template with a surface feature? Or should I use alignments?
  • You can use either alignments or features. Just make sure that the style constraints are unique for left and right sides of roadway.

Good luck and let me know if you need any adidtional assistance.

  • Brian,

I think the parametric constraints are a good way to manage this type of widening, remember you can manage/manipulate/create the parametric constraints from a spread sheet by exporting and importing csv or pipe separated data. You can essentially create a spread sheet that generates widening based on begin and end widening stations. One tip, I like to set my windows Regional Options List separator to | "pipe" this make the export/import process work better because InRoads exports and import using the pipe it works nice if your windows default csv file is also a pipe.

  • What alg file would the alignments have to be in? Currently we have 4 alg files for the project. Could I have the widening alignments in one file or would I need to put them in all four alg files? If I have to put them in all four might it make more sense to use surfaces features where I could put them all in one surface? Thanks.
