File compatibility between V8i and XM

I am working on an infrastructure project with a team of several different consulting firms, some of whom are using InRoads v8 XM and others (myself included) are using V8i.  We are sharing a master alg file, but it only saves down to a V8.9 compatibility if I save it manually.  Is there any way to automatically save an alignment file (using a global option, preferably) in a backward-compatible file type?
