[MX V8i] Volume calculating

Hello,

I design pavement  for the first time via input files and being very delighted :) I have a question about cross section strings and calculating the cross section areas based on these strings which are needed in volume calculating. Is it necessary to "vertical closing" areas at the edges? Are these cases identical from point of view of calculating volumes between "red" and "blue" sections? Do I need to design this almost vertical "wings" at the edges of horizontal "red" section?

Best regards

  • Looks that way - if you change the "DTM" in the input file to:

    EDIT,TMP
    008,3=B000,,1000,1050,10,1200,1050,10
    008,3=B000,,1200,1100,10,1000,1100,10
    999

i.e. along the centre of the road, then the volume is halved.

  • Hi Aleksander,

there's an explanation deep in the MX help:

MX Help > MXROAD > Help > Analysis > Volumes > Calculation of Volumes - principles > Volume calculations - using sections:

    "
    Incomplete boundaries
Where boundaries are incomplete the sections are closed in the following manner.
The sections from the proposed surface (Model 2), terminate at vertical lines through the extreme leftmost and rightmost points, illustrated below as a.
The sections from the existing surface (Model 1), are extended laterally, illustrated below as b
The points of closure to the left and right of the section are where these two lines intersect, illustrated below c.

  • Hi Wolfgang,

So I got a problem because this MX extrapolation generates me a very big problem because I really got little time and this is my first: 1) pavement via input, 2) first modernization, 3) first modernization via input, 4) first reporting via input files and I hope not my first end of career ;) I got (have created) a boundary section string of earthwork/pavement works from slope intersection to slope intersection (continuous cyan). While I have generated a volume report  between design and this boundary (representing pavement area) I saw a "Cut" value. I was wondering "What it could be?". I made a working drawing of this cross section and measure the areas in section. The "Fill" was alright but what is "Cut"? And this is it. what you write... I check and this is a cut of ditches which are "under" the extrapolated (doted cyan) boundary string (yellow areas).

Is there any possibility to make MX calculating only in areas where both sections are present (like in my earlier draft)?

    Best regards

  • Hi Aleksander,

What if you change the order of existing and proposed surface in 056 as suggested by Mark in another post. Does it  still extend the surface.

    Thanks
