[MX V8i] Volume calculating

Hello,

I design pavement  for the first time via input files and being very delighted :) I have a question about cross section strings and calculating the cross section areas based on these strings which are needed in volume calculating. Is it necessary to "vertical closing" areas at the edges? Are these cases identical from point of view of calculating volumes between "red" and "blue" sections? Do I need to design this almost vertical "wings" at the edges of horizontal "red" section?

  • Hi Aleksander,

the only way I know, is to create a boundary around the overlapping area, and then copy the x-sections inside this boundary.

Next question is, how to achive that (in the easiest/fastest way).

Following is an idea, perhaps there are better ways.

You could copy the one section set into a model and then use the function Modify > Edit Strings > Create a Boundary around Model....

Then do the same thing with the other section set.

When you now copy the 1st section set inside the 2nd boundary, and the 2nd section set in the 1st boundary, you should have the overlapping area.

You probably must insert an extra point into the boundaries before the first section and after the last section, so the first and last sections get properly copied inside the boundary.

Depending how your data and input files look like - you could also create the boundary using DESIGN, INTERFACE and EDIT functions.

    Hope this helps

  • Hello Wolfgang,

I have did it other way because I really have little time for experimenting :( I made a little cheat: I have done a two models of section - 1-st from design (which is triangulation model) and 2-nd from subgrade (string model). I got a plan boundary from subgrade string model (strings that are representing intersection of bottom of subrade with design slope) and create an extra model to which copied strings: outside boundary from 1-nd cross-section model (sections of design tria) and all strings from 2-nd section s model (subgrade sections). Now triangulated this combined model and make new cross section. It works but deep in my heart I feel that it is only a substitute of solution...
