Unable to update Database files

We are using the Navigator to make point and chain edits in Microstation. The changes are visualized on the screen and are reflected in the GPK file. When we try to update the OBS and XYZ file using the UPDATE OBS AND XYZ command, we do not get updated files. Does anyone have any ideas? We need the database files to update with the GPK file. This is particularly important when we are working the DTM.

Thank you for your help and ideas.

  • There is one instance when the update OBS and XYZ will not work and that will be if the OBS and XYZ files were moved to a different location that is not the original folder where they created and then imported to the GPK for the first time. Also this option will not work if the original folder was renamed.

Unfortunately when you move the files to a different directory structure you will not be able to update those files anymore unless they are re-imported again. BUT…..Re-importing OBS and XYZ files can cause problems because you will loose any edits you may have done to your data in the GPK file.

There are two ways to fix this, but they may be risky, anyway If you decide not to do this because it is too risky, this would not affect the DTM, since Geopak Survey builds the dtm from Survey data in the GPK file and the SMD (feature codes database); Geopak Survey does not read the OBS or XYZ files when creating the DTM. Updating OBS and XYZ was created to provide a back-up option of the edits in case the GPK was lost or corrupted, there is no need for these files to be use when creating the DTM.

Here are the two ways to fix this:

A: if you are on Geopak XM or later you can use the “Create New” button (from the Updating dialog), it will create a new obs and xyz files from the data in the gpk, be aware that the only info in the obs will now be the Chain information…..the other data like angles and distance will not be there via this procedure.

B: With an input file and the following procedure which is a long way depending on how many Datasets are involved:

Before you do this, make sure to make a back-up of all your files (GPK, dgn, etc….)

    1. make an input file of the existing GPK file for all the elements in it:

To Create an input file of all the elements in the GPK file type this command in the cogo Key-in field:

    MAKE INPUT FILE name99.ich ALL

(where name is the name of the input file, 99 is the Job number for the GPK, i is for input and ch is the operator code) this input file will have the latest edits you did in the GPK. and we will use it later.

    2. access each an every Run and press Import to GPK and over write all the points and survey chains

    3. In cogo Toggle on redefine and set the visualization option to "Permanent

    4. now go to COGO>TOOLS>NAVIGATOR and select element "Survey Chains", press Select>select all, they will all be highlighted and press the delete Icon

    5. Do the same for points

    6. Now lets read the input file:

Load the file into a gpk file that you access with the same operator code, in Cogo press FILE>LOAD a list of input files will show up letting you select the one you want name99.ich , then to store this info in the GPK file press the 4 th  icon left to right "Process all commands".

    7. you will now be able to edit the chains and points and then update the obs and xyz and at the same time you should now have the latest edits in your GPK file

NOTE: It is very important to access COGO with the same operator code you use to name the Input file, also the job number must match the number use in the input file name.

Again make sure you make a back up copy of all your original files just in case……
