InRoads XM or V8i: How to raise or lower the design surface to find a banlanced cut fill volume by not using Site Modeler?

Greetings,

I have created a simple building pad surface using Design Surface (Generate Longitudinal Feature, Generate Sloped Surface). Now I want to find the best design surface elevation so the cut and fill volume is balanced. How to achieve this? Since my design surface was not created in Site Modeler so I am not able to use the Raise/Lower Surface function under Site Modeler.

I am new to Inroads. Any guidance is appreciated.

  • Lucy,

It is an iterative process. Create your design surface using the Design Surface commands. Either your stated method OR using the Apply Template command. Both methods are based on an initial shape you set to an initial elevation. If your cut and fill are not balanced; empty the design surface, reset the initial elevation of the shape and rerun the design surface. Repeat the process until the difference between cut and fill is acceptable.

The newest version of the software has Site Modeler as you mention in the other post. A reason some designers do not like it is that it does not yet have "proper" feature names and styles associated with the output. If you have a purest in your office and extream accuracy in cut - fill is important, run Site Modeler to calculate the solution, take the shape (with elevation) from that solution and run the Design Surface commands on that shape. It's all good. Just remember that there will be slight variations in the results of one method to the others.

  • Thank you Paul. I really wish the Raise/Lower Surface function can be used other than in Site Modeler.
