Is there a way to run the earthwork application manually so that it reads and calculates shapes already created? This would be very beneficial for the complicated earthwork scenarios I have on my project: It doesn't know what to do in some areas and I would like to draw it with the correct symbology and allow the program to do the calculations.
If you are asking can you create manual shapes in certain areas and then have the program read those shapes then the answer is no. However, I've been at this a long time and have seldom run into situations that the earthwork program can't handle. If you want, you can post an example of what you want to do and we'll see if we can help.

Just a 2nd note - shapes themselves won't work. But you are free of course to 'hand draw' any line work and that will be picked up in the earthwork calculations.
Derricke,
I have uploaded a sample from the cross sections. At Sta. 11+00,13+00 & 17+00, notice that the 'cut' shape is not extending up to the existing ground line. At Sta. 12+00 the 'cut' shape does extend as desired, but this only occurs if I extend the outside vertical edges of the proposed up to existing ground. At Sta. 14+00, no shapes were created at all by the program. Please review and let me know if there is a better way to do this. I think at least part of the problem exists because the proposed line work occurs beneath the existing and does not connect to it directly. However, I am not aware of a way around it. Thanks in advance for the help!
The project is mill & resurface with widening and cross-slope correction.
Concerning hand-drawing the line work, do you mean draw the earthwork lines in the earthwork symbology and the program will create the shapes and calculate? Please explain.
Thanks!
I can see your problem. You already nailed it in your post. As long as the 'proposed' elements don't tie to existing ground, then the program can't mathematically create a shape and calculate it. You can manually draw in a tie as you did at 12+00 and it will work. For example, at 14+00 BOTH sides of the proposed are below the existing ground - therefore the program can't do anything. But if I manually draw in a tie on both sides it calculates properly.
