We have a designed jug handle along with working component templates; however, Our Cut/Fill lines are ignoring the existing surface on a few of the stations when we create our cross sections. I've followed the VAOT InRoads manual closely but I can't seem to figure out what exactly is wrong. To help explain my situation, I've attached some pictures.
I've created the templates and ran them thorough the Roadway Designer. Everything came out successful. As shown below:
However this is what the section looks like when it's displayed on the cross section (Note: the dotted line is the existing surface and the proposed surface's cut line intersects it approximately 4' to the right.)
Some additional information: I'm using Microstation V8.5 and InRoads V8.7 (due to client restrictions). Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance,
-Dom
Looks like 'spanning triangles'; I believe you have no exterior boundary created. This allows triangles to be generated between feature points (design surface) along the inside of a curve. You can cure the problem by creating an exterior boundar or by toggling on the Use Features Only option in the Surface>Surface Properties>>Advanced tab for the design surface. I forget if V8.7 had a generate Exterior Boundary option in the Generate Surface command or not. I thought it did.
I cannot really make out the image. The roadway modeler image appears good. There are definite disadvantages to using the 8.7 version vs the 8.11. There has been significant improvements including how the modeler generates and solves end conditions. Not sure what the client issues are but holding that far back on versions is going to have ramifications.
There are instances where components are not generated, for example on the inside of a curve where a feature may double back, or if there is an interruption in features like a transition from a ditch to a fill, there will be a gap.
If you drop templates close say at a 5ft interval this will reduce the gap, and if horizontal and vertical chord height tolerances are enabled this will also reduce the gaps.
You can also display the triangulated surface model in the cross section to see where it solved across component gaps.

What kind of restrictions would limit you to InRoads 8.7 instead of 8.8?
I know that there were some bug fixes and other things in 8.7 that made the move to 8.8 a good idea. You could always save files to earlier versions. I've worked with V8i on projects where the client wanted 8.5 version files and never had issues.

Thanks for the quick responses! Paul, I tried using the "Use Features Only" and it fixed the right-side of the road, however now it ignores the cut/fill on the left-side. It doesn't even display the left-side cut/fill lines. Could my issue now be in the templates? Maybe the feature isn't properly defined?
Mike and Caddcop, I originally had V8i and InRoads 8.11 and being as most of my experience comes from AutoCAD I can agree with you 110% that V8i is far easier and more intuitive then V8.5. The problem with this project is that we have multiple companies coordinating on this project (the jug handle itself is a very minor part of the overall project). We do have the existing surface available as a V8i file and that is what I was originally working with but for some reason when V8.5 users were using it they were complaining about some type of corruption/unable to read issues, even when I saved for earlier versions. As a result it was determined to not use V8i at all, so I've since removed that version and downgraded to a previous version. Is it possible to use InRoads 8.11 with V8.5? I have both versions available to me.
Thanks all
It works now! After the "Use Features Only" was turned on, I had to recreate my surface after using the roadway designer. Everything correctly connects to the existing surface now.
Thanks again for your help.
