InRoads: Horizontal Alignment and Vertical Alignment

Hello, I have the horizontal alignment and vertical alignment created already, It is for a 30km road. Now due to the design changes, I have to modify the horizontal alignment in a certain area, please see the image below, we want to modify the horizontal alignment from the cyan color line to the red color lines (approx. 600m long).

What is the best way to get this done, redo the horizontal alignment and the  vertical alignment, or we can edit the horizontal alignment without affecting the vertical alignment in the other areas? and of cause, the vertical alignment in the affected area needs to be adjusted.

Anybody please kindly share your expertise. Thanks in advance.

  • Lucy,

If you are using V8i, in File->Project Options under the geometry tab there is a checkbox for 'On Horizontal Edits Recompute Vertical Alignments'.

If you tick that box your vertical alignments will remain unchanged outside of the areas that you have moved.

  • I like the recompute vertical geometry, suggested by Mick.  That worked well much better than the method explained below.

    ***out dated***

If you modify the horizontal the vertical will not move or change along with the horizontal.  A VPI that was set at say STA 30+000 would remain there regardless of the new location of the STA 30+000 in the horizontal so, YES this would seem to mess up the vertical.

You might think that defining a station equation would lock down the vertical geometry points to there original location but they do not.

It seems your best option is to define a new horizontal geometry and track the exact change in station values for the begin and end of the amended section.  The begin will more than likely not change but the end more than likely will.  After all the horizontal is complete you can go to the vertical, break it at the locations where the new section starts and ends and delete it because it may not be valid. If you want you can keep in there you may be able to modify and work it into the new vertical using the Vertical Element Tools.

You will need to move the entire Vertical geometry for the unchanged section to the proper location (the change in stations values).  This can be done using the Vertical Element > Edit Vertical Element tools.  Make sure to toggle on the Maintain Connected and Collinear Elements if you want the entire downstream vertical to move with the change in station with the first element after the break.

This may seem complicated but it is not too bad just takes a few carefully orchestrated modifications.  If the geometry you mentioned is very long and complex recreating is would be somewhat complicated and tedious.

If you use the above method you will only need to redesign the new section and connect it to the original geometry, using Vertical Element Tools.
