Site Modeler help, creating a ditch

Hi all,

I am trying to create a ditch by using site modeler along the south and east side of  the parking lot.

Here is the info:

1) parking lot has -1% slope from northwest to southeast corner, hence water flows from northwest to southeast and i need to create ditchs along the south and east boundary.

2) currently i am have to create an alignment just along thoes the east ans south boundary, import geometry from my parking lot along the horizontal alignment as a vertical, then create a corridor just with a ditch on one side and targeting the existing surface. Also i have to sombine these 2 surfaces after.

I am wondering if there is a way to create it just by using site modeler without using roadway designer? ( i knew in pad design, there is a complex slope option, but it will only generate a drain ditch when in cut, i need in both cut and fill situation)

Thank you in advance!

  • It is not clear from your post whether the ditch is tied to the parking lot or if it is independent. That will dictate the  approach. Both scenarios can be done with modeler. Also, do you need to show a design profile for the ditch or can you get by with just a plan view showing spot elevations and horizontal control points?

  • The ditch is tied to the parking lot, and I don't need to show a design profile, just plan view is enough.

I was trying to search more learning material on line, but seems like not much of them is out there.

    Thank you for your time!

  • I've found very little material aside from the tutorials and Bentley Learn content published by Bentley. There is also not much support in the forums so figuring out techniques can be a time consuming trial and error process.

So getting to your question, now that we know your constraints I suggest the following approach:

Since the horizontal location of the flowline of the ditch is going vary according to the height and slope from the parking lot, you will need to use a surface as a target for the slope from the parking lot to the ditch. To do that, draw a best guess alignment for the flowline and grade it using the any of the available tools. Then create the target surface by creating offsets from the flowline at some distance to ensure coverage for the slope from the parking lot.

Next create the ditch object and drape an element on the edge of the parking lot with Association toggled on so it will update when the parking lot changes. Next use the Slope Element tool to create a toe of the ditch from the parking lot element to the target surface. Lastly use the resulting element to apply a ditch bottom and sides to the ditch. If you need berms in fill areas, apply a minimum ditch height element to the ditch bottom and apply a Slope Element with the Fill Only option to add berms in fill conditions.
