Problems with superelevation and shoulder rollover locks of my template

Hello guys

Am working on a design, a 4lane divided highway template with raised median barrier and kerbs together with cover drainage, in which the shoulder and the drainage are together, so i built the template and applied it to the corridor, but when i tried to calculate the superelevation for the curved section, i discovered that while in the superelevation mode my template was not well interpreted by inroads, it was picking templates points that are not needed to define the section of the road to be superelevated, it was picking points that were directly above the required points. it would make alot of sense if i include a picture of my template so you guys can have a look at it.

this is a link to the picture of the template: https://hotfile.com/dl/154152787/d2b0877/SUPERELEVATION_PROBLEMS.jpg.html

Please am currently stucked in this stage, pls any suggestion on the possible way to build templates for divided highway with raised median that includes drain and shoulder, just as i have it in the picture above, and it will be able to calculate the superelevation. what i discorvered is that superelevation wizard will always look for all the top points in a template, but from the template i designed some of my points a directly below. so please how do i solve this problem.

Thanks to the entire house, looking forward to your  replies

  • Akande, take a closer look at the constraints on the bottom of curb at the median. make sure the top of curb is constrained horz and vertical to the bottom of curb.

When fully superelevated where are the points of rotation? At the median edge?

Did you define separate supers for the left and right side of the highway?

Looks like the center of the highway could use a vector-offset constrained between the median curb and the outside curb if the center point slope follows the left and right side.

In Super, you would only need to create super lines for the outside and inside curb lines.

Could you attached your .itl and .ird file?

  • A few more things to consider.

Rollover locks are not needed in this case since there is no shoulder. The rollover locks are applied to the segment just outside your backbone. In this case you have curb, no rollover needed.

InRoads triangulation will not support vertical faces. So your face of curb component should have a horizontal offset from the bottom of curb to the top of curb of .01m or .001m. This is set to allow triangulation of the top surface. To check this, have your display triangulated surface checked on in your Roadway Designer Tools>Options.

Your bottom components points should be constrained Horizontally and Vertically to the point above. This is critical when applying superelevation. Your should also experiment with the vector-offset constraint. This is a very powerful constraint in a highway template with Superelevation.

The center points of your divided highway lanes, are they really needed? Not knowing your design I would consider removing them if they provide no value to your design. If they are in the template, to supports graphics in Microstation for a drafting line I would consider removing them. Parametric Constraints can be used to control pavement widths.

Bottom Line - Make your template simple as possible.

  • Thanks joe about to download and check it out, another thing have you heard of  dynamite vps used for road visualization, it is very powerfull, but it autodesk has bought it,  you can easily export your corridor into the program and it does all the visualization for you.

    cheers

  • joe thanks alot i checked out the template it was amazing all the changes you made to it, it now worked properly with superelevations, Joe pls just one very important thing, pls have you ever used AUTOCAD with inroads, actually our design office is a multi cad environment, we are running inroads v8i SS2 on both microstation and Autocad, everything seems to be okay with microstation when i want to cut out plan and profile sheet, but when i try it with autocad there is an interuption and the command will terminate.

What am saying is, have you had any experience using autocad with inroads, most especially for plan and profile production

Thanks for all your endless advice and recommendations, i could not have  been able to get to the stage i am,

    JOE THANKS

  • Thank You,

I have no background with InRoads and Autocad. You must contact Bentley Support for thier advice. If you are going to the BE Conference in Philadelphia, PA USA  you will gain alot of knowledge in these areas. I will be there.

    Regards,

    Joe

  • Thanks  alot Joe, i would really love to be at the BE conference, but due to the workload in the office, i cannot make it, i know it is going to be an exciting one for you, so please have a wonderful time over there in PA.

Once more thanks alot, you inspire me alot.
