LandXML Import SS3

All-

I have attached a LandXML file created by Leica Design to Field/Road Runner.  This file contains Alignments, Profiles and Typical X-Sections. My basic question is: Can SS3 (Open Roads?) interpret this file to create a Design Surface file that we could pass on via LandXML or some other format to our dirt work guys for machine grading? Is there any other intelligence that can be gathered from this file? ie Can Open Roads translate this file to graphic alignments, profiles and cross sections like Leica Design to Field does?

Thanks in advance

  • Follow up.  Is anybody running the latest and greatest Civil 3D?  If so would you mind testing the import of the attached XML file?  What i am trying to do is get a report in International feet of the typical templates that exist within the XML file.  Even if we could get CAD to draw the typicals it would save a lot of time. We have over a 100 different transition typicals that we have to present to the DOT in some legible form for their review.

    thanks again

  • Are the units in the file meters or not? If the units are really international feet, you could rename the units. This is right in the beginning of the file...

    <Units>

    <Metric linearUnit="meter" areaUnit="squareMeter" volumeUnit="cubicMeter" temperatureUnit="celcius" pressureUnit="HPA"/>

    </Units>

    You would have to research the proper syntax.

    I tried bringing the file into Civil 3D 2013

    Here are the errors received:

    No sign of any templates (assemblies) or cross sections after import.

    Only a horizontal alignment and a design profile with no curves. It looks like it has VPI points at all VPC and VPT ponts and of course the actual curve VPI's

    without any curves.

  • Thanks for the try Caddcop, The file is indeed metric (that is the Leica default).  It is a shame that neither GeoPak or Civil can read these files.  This is the slickest/most compact way I have seen yet to transfer and layout roadway data.  I hope somebody from Bentley is watching this thread closely it would be very nice to use this format for all our future transfers.
