Elements Disappear when Zooming In

The following issue was submitted to Bentley Technical Support. This issue has been transferred to this forum so that the community can benefit from the troubleshooting techniques and resolution.

As soon as I open DGN files after a specific person in our office worked on it, the line elements disappear when zooming in. For example, when you have a line and you zoom in, after a certain distance the line disappears.  When you zoom back out, after a certain distance, the line reappears.

I tried the following solutions neither of them worked (these solutions were found on Be Communities):

•  Another simple trick to fix elements with incorrect range issues is to force microstation to rotate everything by 0 degrees. Using a very small fence with nothing in it, then rotating all elements by 0 degrees will have no visible effect, but will cause microstation to re-evaluate each element's range, and should reset it.

Place a fence (use a very small fence with no elements in it)
Rotate method: active angle > set to 0 degrees...
About element center: doesn't matter if it is checked or not since degrees is 0 copies: unchecked
Use fence: checked and set to void-overlap

• You mentioned that this happens to "some" colleagues.  If this behavior does not happen to the same file on some computers, you may have a video card/driver issue.  I've seen similar behavior in the past, and one solution was to go to the Troubleshoot tab on the Advanced Settings of the display properties and move the hardware acceleration slider back a couple of notches.

  • If you could answer a couple of questions, I will be able to better troubleshoot this issue.

    1. Are all elements disappearing or just some of the elements?
    2. Are you able to select and highlight these elements?
    3. Please confirm that you are only seeing this problem after the file is worked on by another specific user.  So, you are stating that you can work fine in the file, but after this other user opens/works in the file, you begin seeing the problem?  Are the two of you using the exact same product and version number?

Would it be possible for you to attach a problem DGN file to this thread for testing purposes?

  • Hi Jacquelyn,

    Answers to your questions:

    1. I created many long sections on a drawing, when I zoom in to some of them the elements disappear and not for others. So only some elements disappear.
    2. Yes I can select the elements, even if my zoom range makes them disappear. I zoomed in until the elements disappeared and selected randomly on the black screen and it still tallied up the amount of elements selected.
    3. I create most of the drawings we work on, and the drawing was fine until this person worked on it. But if he creates a drawing and I work on it there is no such problem.

We are both working on Power Civil V8i for South Africa_SS2; 08.11.07.566.

Attached is the drawing as requested; I have circled the once that have the zoom issue.

    Regards

    Megan

  • Megan,

To resolve this issue, please create a new file from seed.  Reference in the DGN that is having the issue.  Then merge the reference into the new seed file.

I just tried this on the test file, and the issue was resolved.

Without hands-on testing, it's impossible to determine what particular action from the other user is causing this problem.
