Hello,
A user has brought to my attention that when attempting to Delete a group of features from a fairly large .DTM the command seems to require a large chunk of time, he has waited in excess of 10 minutes apparently with no results. The .DTM in question is around 19mb, and he is using PowerInroads 08.11.07.615 for his surface edits. Using a fence, and feature filter to narrow down his results also appears to produce no better.
My question is, does this command just take this long? I know there could be a million variables here, however was hoping someone recognizes the problem as something simple =) I was not sure if perhaps after the delete command finishes, that the entire file is attempting to re-display or something like that? Any help is appreciated, thanks!
As you mentioned there are many variables that could contribute to this behavior beginning with the file size but I would consider the following:
• Tools>Locks>Feature Highlight – When selected, this option highlights the feature in plan view when it is selected in the list. Each feature may be selected twice, initial selection and again selected as they are being deleted.
• Tools>Locks>Style – If on and a View Surface command is selected, Surface graphic are displayed without the option of the user selecting specific setting, this option causes the software to read the preference name assigned to the surface. If this option is selected and no preference has been assigned to the surface, the software applies the Preferred Preference defined within Project Options which may cause some delay.
• Ensure that Graphic Group lock is off.
Were the surface features deleted? I could not locate a DTM over 8MB but I’d be happy to test your DTM if you’d like.
Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions Sanders. I checked a few of those out, however when i tried out the command myself i noticed that my fence is not narrowing down the features listed in delete feature. I have tried toggling it Inside, Outside, etc with no change in the features listed in the dialog box. I am wondering if he was not narrowing down his features as he had intended and was deleting a much larger group than he thought.
What could be causing inroads to not recognize a fence for its commands?
Thanks again!
Place your fence, select Delete Feature command and then select Inside as your Fence Mode. Select your features to be deleted and Apply (you will receive the Delete selected feature dialog) and OK. Your features will display outside the fence with features inside fence deleted.

I see. I assumed the list inside the dialog box would narrow down its list to only features inside the fence limits. So, i suppose i am still at a loss. Feature Highlight was not selected, nor was Style Lock or Graphic Group. I'm beginning to think that the file is just this large, and maybe the command needs to be initiated and just the let the computer work through it for however long it takes?
Size could very well be the case. As I mentioned, I could not locate a DTM over 8MB for testing. Did the process complete? Were the surface features deleted?
