Creating a Simple Pond in a Civil Cell

This is an example of creating a simple civil cell that represents a pond. The pond will be based off of an element representing the bottom of the pond. The pond will have 3:1 interior slopes for the first 6 vertical feet then 6:1 slope for the next 3 vertical feet. Finally the pond will have a 10 wide bench before tying to the surrounding terrain surface with 3:1 slopes.

Steps to Create:

1. Start with a blank 2D design file created from a good SS3 seed file. This will ensure a clean start.

2. Next you can either create a terrain model or reference in one to the file. In this example a simple terrain model was created with a 10% slope.

3. Place a horizontal element that represents the bottom of your pond. In the picture above a complex element was constructed using the horizontal geometry place line and place simple arc tool.

4. Next it is time to establish the element that represents the 3:1 slope for 6 vertical feet. To do this you can use Create 3D Line By Slope To Target

5. Setting up the tool options as shown below then following the tool prompts to create the element.

Note: The Side option may vary depending on how the pond bottom element was drawn. Just make sure the element is placed in the correct location for your design.

6. Using the same tool but changing the options as necessary you will create the element representing the inside top of the pond at a 3:1 slope for 3 vertical feet.

Again it is important to follow the prompts and to make sure the side option works for the elements in your design.

7. Now it is time to create the 10’ berm or the element that represents the outside edge of the top of pond. Using the same Create 3D Line By Slope tool with the settings shown below.

The Slope Option was changed to For Horizontal Distance and a Distance of 10.00 was entered. The slope options can be set to 0.00% or what the desired cross slope of the berm should be.

8. The next step is to create the slope to the surrounding terrain. We have a simple terrain that we set to active and will apply a linear template to the outside of the berm element that will apply 3:1 slopes to that terrain. Select the Apply Linear Template tool.

9. In the tool settings dialog select the appropriate template that will create the desired side slopes. In this example a simple template was constructed and saved to the template library.

Following the prompts select the outside berm element to apply the linear template to.

10. Now we will create a civil cell. There are other things we could do such as place all the elements in a Terrain so that when the civil cell is used a terrain will also be created but for purposes of this exercise we will just create the civil cell. Select the Create Civil Cell tool.

11. The first prompt is to name the civil cell. Type a name that represents the name for this civil cell. In this example the name is Pond Example.

12. Now the prompt says to Locate Reference Element which in this case is the original pond bottom graphic in which everything was built off of.

The elements will highlight and we can press the Reset button to complete this step.

13. The next prompt is for an optional reference element or reset to complete.

In this case there is not an optional reference element.

14. Finally we can accept the creation of the civil cell. To verify the cell simply use the element selection tool and select it. All elements will be included in the display of the cell.

Note: The only element that will not highlight is the reference element.

15. You can also review the civil cell in the Project Explorer under the Civil Model Tab as shown. This can also be used to verify the elements in the civil cell.
