How do I create a point using 3D alignment stationing?

InRail enables users to combine both the horizontal and child vertical alignment to create true 3D stationing that can be accessed using the Geometry > Cogo Points > New dialog with the Define By option set to 3D Station/Offset. This is shown in the diagram below.

    New Cogo Point dialog

Is there a quick way to change the styles applied to cogo points in a batch process?

The following steps provide a quick way to change the styles applied to cogo points in a batch process:

    1. Go to Geometry > View Geometry > Horizontal Annotation.
    2. Set the Mode to Points.
    3. Set Apply Style to Active, which uses the active style for the display and assigns the active style to each element.
    4. Define the cogo points that you want to change. An asterisk in the Annotate keyin field selects all cogo points. Select the Filter button to access the Geometry Selection Filter dialog to select specific cogo points.
    5. Go to the Active Styles tab and select the desired Active Point Style.
    6. Turn the Write Lock off unless you want to display them.
    7. Click Apply.
    8. A prompt will ask, "Do you want to overwrite the current style with the active style?" Click Yes.

I know I can delete cogo points one at a time, but is there a way to delete a range of cogo points all at once?

Using the Geometry > Cogo Points > Delete command, it is possible to use a wild card, a range of points, or the Geometry Selection Filter to delete specific points.

    Wild Card

You can use wild cards anytime you see the Filter button. Wild cards apply only to actions taken on points or alignments. The following are rules for using wildcards:

    Wild CardDefinition/Example
    * Matches any number of characters. For example, sac* will act on all points or alignments that begin with sac.
? Matches any single character. For example, sac??? will act on all points or alignments that start with sac and are followed by any three characters.
    % Matches any single character.
[c-c] Matches any range of characters for a single character.

Wild cards can also be combined to form complex selection strings by delimiting each wild card with a comma. InRoads Help offers additional information on how wild cards work.

    Geometry Selection Filter

You can also utilize the Geometry Filter with a MicroStation fence or AutoCAD region, which will allow you to further refine the points that are selected.

I selected Create/Edit Align from Cogo Points and InRoads displayed an error message stating that my alignment contained illegal point names and asking if I wanted to assign names. What do I do?

After selecting Create/Edit Align from Cogo Points, if an error message displays stating that the alignment contains illegal point names, this indicates that the command is attempting to edit the alignment that is currently active.

This occurs when the active alignment is not comprised of cogo points or named alignments points. As the command requires that the points be numbered in order to edit the alignment, the software is providing you the option to name them 'on the fly'. When you are creating a new alignment or about to edit an inactive alignment, you can click No. To edit the active alignment, click Yes and the points will be numbered. Keep in mind that the command numbers points as numbered alignment points, not cogo points.

How do I convert alignment points to cogo points?

To convert alignment points to cogo points, first make the desired alignment active. Then select Geometry > Horizontal Curve Set > Events. Next, select the Alignment Point to Cogo radio button on the left of the dialog box and define a seed number value for the initial cogo point naming. Click Apply. If a cogo point name is already used, it will be skipped and the next available name will be assigned.

After I delete cogo points, why does InRoads sometimes not allow me to use the point number again?

InRoads will not allow you to reuse a deleted cogo point number until the number has been cleared. Try saving the geometry project. If this doesn't release the point number, you may need to reload it as well.
