Question:
How do I create cardinal directions in OpenRoads SignCAD?
Answer:
When Cardinal directions are typed to a 15”/12” specification, they are all caps, with the first letter being 15” and additional letters resized in the same text to 12”, then baseline aligned.

Here are instructions for creating the cardinal direction SOUTH with 15”/12” E Series multiple size text in OpenRoads SignCAD.
- Pick Preferences>Text Font E Series
- Pick Preferences>Text Size 15”
- Pick the Text tool to type S. Without selecting outside the text type <Ctrl>S to display a popup menu, pick Text Size and change to 12 and type OUTH<enter>.
- Pick the Select tool and right click on SOUTH, pick Text align Baseline.
Here are instructions for creating the cardinal direction NORTH with 15”/12” ClearviewHwy-5-W-R multiple size text in OpenRoads SignCAD.
- Pick Preferences>Text Font ClearviewHwy-5-W-R or Preferences>Text Font>More Fonts ClearviewHwy-5-W-R if the ClearviewHwy fonts are not listed in the Text Font dialog in the selected standard.
- Pick Preferences>Text Size 15”
- Pick the Text tool to type N<space>. Without selecting outside the text type <Ctrl>S to display a popup menu, pick Text Size and change to 12 and type ORTH<enter>.
- The Clearview font has no definition for the spacing between letters of different sizes, therefore, a space character is added to set the value. Using the Text tool, highlight the space character and set the size to 3” by right clicking on the highlighted space and picking <Ctrl>S, 3, OK:
- Pick the Select tool and right click on NORTH, pick Text align Baseline.
NOTE: The Texas standard in OpenRoads SignCAD has all the cardinal directions used for large signs available from the Templates menu>Large Signs (Samples)>Cardinal Direction (Large Signs)>EAST, NORTH, SOUTH and WEST as shown below. These cardinal directions use the ClearviewHwy-5-W-R font.
