 Parametric Mapping

There are certain Revit families that have a limited number of predefined shapes. Concrete columns and beams are a good example. There are only a very few predefined shapes in each of the families. There can be any number of shape sizes for these families so there cannot be an automatic mapping to a particular size when importing or exporting a repository from Revit. These can be handled with the parametric mapping of Revit families and ISM shapes.

ISM Section Creation Template

Let’s take a look at adding parametric shapes to the ISM Section Creation template.

  1. Open the sections mapping dialog by either picking the Settings button on the Bentley tab in Revit

Or, if you are in the Structural Synchronizer Mappings dialog click the Edit Shared Settings button

  2. Select ISM Section Creation Template from the menu on the left

  3. Click Add and then the browse button next to Family

  4. We are adding a concrete rectangular column family to the mapping, select the family from the table and click the Select button

  5. Set the parameters for the height and width of the column and click OK

  6. Now the concrete rectangular columns are added to the mapping

You can repeat the steps for any additional families.

Family Type Creation Template

Now let’s look at adding Revit type families to the mapping. One thing different about these mappings is you can only map one ISM parametric section type to one Revit family type. So if you have the ISM solid rectangle type mapped to the Revit concrete-square-column type you cannot also map it to the Revit concrete-rectangular-column type.

  1. If the mapping dialog is not already opened, open it as described earlier
  2. Select the Family Type Creation Template from the left side menu

  3. Click the Add button and in the dialog that opens, left click the Revit Family Type field and browse to Revit families. Select the concrete-round-column. Click Select

  4. Select the Diameter parameter from the drop down and click OK

Repeat the steps to add any other shapes you need.
