Floating column

can anyone help me with designing a  column resting on a beam.  actuallly i need to erect a column in between the span of a  primary beam running on two regular grids, so that i can have a lifted slab for my water tank.

thank you

  • Support will not be necessary at the bottom of the beam as long as the beam has enough stiffness to carry the shear and bending moment induced by the floating column. You just have to detail it as transfer girder/beam.

  • What I feel that if you make the beam too stiff as suggested to carry the load and stresses from the floating column, it would be necessary to check the beam against punching i.e. two way shear. I understand that two way shear will not be checked by Staad pro. This will have to be done manually. If you find any thing in my posting to which you do not agree or any member of the forum do not agree, I shall be glad to be corrected.

  • Dear Mr.Sureshprsharma,

Your sketch explaining to counteract the floating column on Girder beam is good enough fora single column. If the span of the Girder is say 20 m and there are many floating columns then we can not have the bracing system but only way is to design as a DEEP BEAM with Strut and TIE analysis means.

  • Dear All

I enclose a sketch plan showing many floating columns on a beam as suggested by Mr. Rangarajan. Please see the sketch plan. What I feel that behaviour of the beam- column with many floating columns will change and the columns may behave as a source for transferring load from the upper floor beam  to the lower floor beam more or less like UDL.The columns will go to stiffen the structure and help the frame in resisting lateral force in the direction of beam supporting the columns. This will be very similar to infill wall. The structure will become composite in the portion where the so called floating columns are resting

I have not found any support to my above statement in any Text book becuse Text books mostly deal with usual and routine cases. My strong perception is that the structure will behave in the manner described above.

I shall be very very obliged to the person who adduces a contradictory view so that smoke is clear of my perception. Earlier the better.
