Export to IFC from Microstation

As I can see, there's not possible to export to IFC-format from Microstation. Am I wrong, or why isn't this possible?

As I know, IFC is made for being the exchange-format for 3D-models. So it's strange for me when Microstation do not support this.

  • Hi Yngvar,

did you follow Gijsbert's advice and to post the question to MicroStation community (Modeling and Visualization forum)?

This is not correct, IFC is the format designed to share data about buildings and other building structures like geometry, their attributes and relationships.

In my opinion it's not strange at all. MicroStation is general 2D/3D modeling product, so IFC referencing and import is supported, because MicroStation is able to correctly maintain IFC geometry and attributes. MicroStation does not work with data required to create IFC model including building information. The situation is the same as with SHP format. SHP is GIS format, so MIcroStation is able to import it (both geometry and attributes) but is not able to export it, because doesn't contain tools required to produce correct GIS structures.

IFC export is supported by e.g. AECOsim Building Designer, which is architecture and building engineering solution developed on top of MicroStation modeling engine.
