Pages are not automatically updating... why?

I'm using Promis*e V8i over AutoCAD2012 on a Windows 7 computer.  I'm having issues (seems to happen on copied projects), that pages are no longer updating.  For example, if I have a parent symbol placed on one page, child on another, and layout symbol placed, if I delete out one, the others are not updating when opening the other pages (like the parent page).  I have to manually update each page, then save, then navigate then update this page and so on.  Is there a fix to this?

  • I assume projects are being copied using Project Manager, is that correct? Are you typically copying entire projects (Copy Project) or copying pages from one or more projects to another?

This kind of sounds like there are offline pages, but then I would not expect manually updating them to fix the problem. But it still might be good to check. You can check online/offline status of a page on the Modify Page dialog. Or to quickly see which pages are online or offline in a project, use Run Reports to run the "Page List - Letter" report, which includes an "Online" column. See also Problems associated with offline pages.

  • Yes, this has happened from a copied project in project manager. I've had this happen in the past and on a current project. I cannot verify that it is always a copy project, but it appears to be at least the common case.
I have checked and confirmed that all pages are online.
  • Ok. This sounds like the problem does happen 100% of the time, and a quick test of copying a sample project worked fine for me. Is there an easily reversible change you can make in the original project and in the copy so we can compare results? I'm just wondering if the problem exists in the original project.

When you say the page is not updating, is that limited to cross references or does it also apply to other things like device IDs, symbol attribute text, etc.?

  • Its actually not all the time, I'd say closer to 10%, and I'm trying to pinpoint cases but it seems like it could be a network or server issue. I am not sure if there is a project file (xml or something) that is getting partially corrupt. I've tried to even copy a corrupt project to force new clean files. This still did not solve the problem.

We actually use project manager's copy project feature 99.9% of our projects as we have a template project set up with one page, filled out title blocks, default parameters set, and no contents on page. Also, I oftentimes use copy project of already completed projects, and not all of them have this problem. This leads me to believe its an issue with projects that include many cross references.

I only noticed deviceID parant/child/layout relationships not updating, but it could be wire cross references as well. We don't use symbol attribute text enough to know if this is a problem.
  • When the problem is discovered, you could make another copy of the source project as a test and see if the problem occurs in the new copy. Maybe make a few copies to see if the copies are consistently good or bad. If the copies are consistently bad, then the source project could be examined. If some of the copies are good, then it would seem like the source project is good. In that case I don't know what to suggest other than trying to correlate problem copy operations to network issues like you mentioned, and perhaps seeing if Rebuild Project Database is a less tedious method of fixing projects.
