Promis.e as a standalone graphic environment

Hi,

for a long time a Powerdraft license was added to a promis.e license. Although we are using promis.e standalone in newest version, very often we have utilized PD license to work on simple drawings, non-electrical plans and so on - because it's lightweight app and works with our custom Microstation workspace as well. But as I have been told, that's no longer true and newly bought promis.e licenses doesn't have "bonus" Powerdraft license.

Is there a easy way to run promis.e as a clean graphic environment only, without loading Project Manager, ELCAD mdlapp and other promis.e customizations?

Of course I know about a possibility of choosing File -> Open, but doing that way I still have some unnecesary things loaded. I have made some experiments to modify shortcut and some variables and I succeed to do that, but some unstability still occurs like an error message when closing a file. So maybe there is a "magic" switch to achieve that or something :-)

  • Going back a few years, Promis.e historically ran on top of AutoCad, which had to be purchased separately from AutoDesk, making it an extra expense for users. With the advent of Promise. 2007, we were able to bundle it with Bentley MicroStation PowerDraft so that users would no longer have to make a separate additional purchase from another company. But it was still confusing for users who then had to download and separately install two different products from Bentley’s website and make sure that they had the license running for both products, and otherwise manage two programs. In 2011with Promis.e V8i we were able to better integrate them and simplify the process so that users only had one product, Promis.e, with a built in standalone version of MicroStation to download, install and manage. This also give us a much closer unification and provide better performance since it is all supplied together.

All of the CAD commands for the MicroStation functions are still included and available for you to use, but since it is one promis.e product now and not two, you can’t separate out the functions. If you try to disable to promis.e portion from loading you will also disable the software licensing and it will not function. You can, as you already mentioned, use File > Open and the other CAD MicroStation commands, but the promis.e functions will still be there as well.

  • Thank you Tani. If promis.e have all Microstation commands, I think I can live with that File->Open method - unless I don't want to pay extra for Powerdraft license.

But please give me a tip: what is the best way to put into Promis.e some customizations from my current workspace? Mainly fonts, printer drivers, cell libs, dgnlibs and so on.

Now for MS/PD we have a networking workspace, with a bunch of cfg files setting variables on different levels: User, Site or Projects (Project level is barely used). Every app shortcut is accompanied with "-wcX:\...." switch.

But when you choose File->Open in promis.e, there are no User/Project options. I can imagine for example creating one, new cfg file with all variables I want and add it somehow to promis.e startup (also -wc switch?). Or maybe it should have been done in some other way.

Of course I can edit some files directly in Promis.e workspace, but I don't want to. The goal is, to put it on some network location for easy sharing with "classic" workspace and decouple it from workspace promis.e install on a local hard drive.

  • If you already have MIcroStation and have your custom environment set up, is there a reason why you don't just use MicroStation for any purely cad edits to non-promis.e drawings?
  • I'm talking about situation, where there will be promis.e only (new licenses; no Microstation or Powerdraft).
