How do you combine two separate 3D models' dgn files into one dgn with two models and still retain saved views/section cuts?

I'm not sure that my question is even worded totally right (another post late in the day :-/) but... what I'm trying to achieve is to combine two 3D model dgns into one, and not lose all the linkages between my construction drawings and my saved views/section cuts/references. So I'm thinking the models box then using "import models" would be a good place to start. But another concern I had was that I didn't see a way to have both models be visible in the main default model while still being able to toggle the visibility on and off like you can in the references box. Any help or suggestions? Thanks.

  • Jeff, when I first started reading your post my first thought was to use references. But then you mentioned references like you were aware of their capability but they were not an acceptable option. Why is referencing one DGN into the other not acceptable?

  • Hello Matt,

The main reason for not referencing the two 3D models together (Which is currently how I have it configured.), is that the client standards state only one 3D model shall be used for the entire substation. When I started modeling I figured that modeling in two separate files would cut down on processing power. And my thought was ,… well I can just merge them later on. But now I have saved views in both that are ref’d into construction drawings.
Another issue I'm experiencing from using this referenced method is that the two 3D files have 2D models in them, as well as other references nested within. So dealing with the reference hierarchy has become kind of confusing. Especially for other people working on the files that aren't familiar with how it's structured, they aren't sure what level to turn off in what reference and so forth.
