How to create 3D Substation from 2D raster image ?

How to do 3D substation using Bentley substation from 2d raster image? Please help. I already insert the dwg. to the software, but I don't know how to place the reference point onto the dwg.file. I also find it very difficult to find the symbols for the isolator.

2. How about the rod for the grounding grid? I'm not sure on how to insert the grounding rod. is it will be placed automatically?

3. When inserting the structure, does it need a base like the transformer?

Hope for a asap reply. Thanks .

Are you referring to the Project Reference Point (PRP)? If so, select 3D Layout Design > Manage Project Reference Point then click the Help button on the resulting Project Reference Point dialog.

You could try selecting 3D Layout Design > Insert Substation Objects, set the Part Type to "Single", and add a filter like [Detailed_Description1] Contains switch, then Apply Filter

In Bentley Substation V8i SELECTseries 8, grounding rods can be placed using the 3D Layout Design > Insert Rod Object tool or inserted automatically when the grounding grid is drawn using the Place Grounding Grid and Segments tool.

This is really a question of design principles. Bentley Substation does not require a base to be placed for you to place a structure, but I would think there would normally be some kind of foundation under a structure in the design. Note: I am not a substation design expert.

  • Hello Sofia,
A 2D raster file can be attached to a 3D Layout page, as a raster reference. You can use this as a true "reference", if the raster file is true scale, 1:1. If not, simply scale the raster reference to full size. Once this is done, you can insert and align 3D models on top of the 2D raster image.

Project Reference Point: Follow Matt's suggestion on searching help. This topic is covered in the Substation 3D Fundamentals class.

Isolator: Is this a 3D model created by someone in your company? Your librarian or CAD administrator should be able to give you the correct part number, symbol and catalog name. While we supply several catalogs with the product, these may or may not have the exact equipment you require.

Ground rods: If you are using SELECTseries 8, follow Matt's suggestion. For SELECTseries 7 and earlier versions, you can create a 3D model of a ground rod an insert it using standard methods.

Structures: As Matt points out, the software does not require a base or foundation ... but from a real-world view, a structure will need to be attached to some sort of base. If you use PRP or DTM insert methods, you could simply insert structures "on the ground" so to speak, without using bases or foundations.

  • Dear @matt_p thanks for your help. I just completed inserting the symbols.

  • Dear Mike,

We have no CAD team on creating symbol for 3D model out of the equipment. I am trying to create a proof of concept using Bentley Substation as I want to see how the features will work & what if I convert it in 3D.

I use the scale as per suggest by you. There is a prompt message to choose the dimension to be in metres or mm. Please advise.

I tried to copy the previous symbol inserted, when I paste it, I can see that the object is either floating / sit below the ground. I already use DTM mode . At the end, I had to move the subject to the ground using the copy/paste/move feature. Isn't the equipment suppose to follow the DTM attached ?

    Regards,
    Sofia

ME: Ok, so try to chose equipment from Bentley catalogs, that is close to what you need.

ME: Sounds like you are trying to start with an existing DWG or AutoCAD file, an you receive that prompt, yes? Keep things simple and choose meters. Then make sure your master units are set to meters.

ME: If you using DTM, then try to insert all similar components rather than copy. If you use copy - and your DTM is a basic flat surface, make sure to choose DTM and "Lock Height" in tool settings.
