Can I utilize filters in the level manager to make drawings show different levels as a default view for different groups of users?

Many times I have opened drawings to find that a previous user has turned a bunch of levels on/off. And this is to be expected when different groups are working on the same project. But can I mitigate this somehow?

Is there a way to set up a level filter so that when someone in the electrical group opens a drawing they can apply a "default electrical level view" filter and it shows the level they want to see?

And then a "default civil level view" filter could be applied for a user in the civil group and so forth?

Thanks.

  • Hi Jeff. Creating filters would allow you to create Level Groups, so selecting a particular filter on Level Manager would list only the levels in the Level Group. You could then select all the levels in that group and turn their display on or off. So it would require some more clicks than simply selecting a filter. And this would be DGN file specific, meaning you'd have to create the filters in your other DGN files.

A better way might be to create your own button(s) that would execute key-ins to turn certain levels on and others off. Creating a tool/button is covered in the Customizing the Interface article, and the level display key-ins are discussed in the Other Customizations section. If the levels from other groups vary, you could have the tool turn off all levels before turning on the electrical levels with a key-in like level set display off *

The advantage to this method is that it is immediately available in any page you open.

  • Thanks for the reply Matt. Unfortunately any customizing of the interface that involves editing dgnlib files or loading custom dgnlib files, is client-controlled. But I did find a partial solution that has been working for me, so I thought I would share for the community: I have been using the "Manage View Groups" tool to create a view group that shows top, front, side, & iso views. And it has certain levels turned off that I don't need, as well as an illustration modeling display style applied to the iso view. To do this I set up all the views, position of the view windows, levels, and display attributes and then click on manage view groups > create a new group & name it > apply and close. And since I really only need to do this when I am working in the 3D model files within the project, I don't have to do this process on an entire set of drawings.
