Catalogue Manager & Parts DB Issues

Good Day All

Currently we have a team of 9 individuals working on setting up Bentley Substation V8i (Select Series 8) for our utility. Each user has a high spec laptop and our catalogue and parts database is stored on server which we all are connected to. Below is a screenshot of the ping statistics to the server;

We are currently experiencing a problem in that updates (additions, deletions etc.) done to our catalogue manager are not being reflected instantaneously. This changes are also not reflected on the Parts DB. Generally this problem seems to be worse during the day (8am - 4pm) when all employees are accessing the network. Out of these time frames updates performed in the catalogue manager seem to work correctly.

1. Could the quality of the network connection be causing this?

2. Could the number of simultaneous users accessing the same catalogue/SQL Server have an impact on this?

3. Could an Antivirus/Firewall be also contributing to this?

Any assistance would be welcomed.

  • Hi Mohammad,

    Do you mean to say that when you try to delete a symbol from a catalog or add a new one the changes are not getting reflected instantaneously? Do you have any observations on how much time is required? Also, regarding the Parts Database are you using Access database or a SQL server database?

  • Good Day

    Do you mean to say that when you try to delete a symbol from a catalog or add a new one the changes are not getting reflected instantaneously

    Yes! Although the program knows that a particular symbol has been added to the catalogue, it does not show it. If you try to paste the same symbol again it will ask "do you want to override the existing symbol"! So the program does know that the symbol was copied across but it doesn't show in the list.

    Do you have any observations on how much time is required?

    Not exact times but we notice that when most staff have left the building the transactions on the catalogue manager appear more instantaneously.

    We are suspecting that it is a network traffic issue and that we have to possibly engage IT to prioritize Bentley Substation Traffic.

    Kind Regards

    Mohammad

  • Hi Mohammad,

    What is the edition of the SQL Server that you are using? Is it a Express, Standard or a Enterprise edition? There can be noticeable lag if a Express edition of SQL server is being used and if many users are trying to connect to it simultaneously. Do you notice some delays while opening and closing the pages as well?
