Best Practices for Wire and Cables use in OpenUtilities Substation (Wire List Run Reports)

Hello everyone,

I'm facing a problem in OpenUtilities Substation about the best use of Wire and Cables.

BACKGROUND:

When I started to modeling this Pilot Project for the electrical part of the Substation, I saw there was the tool of "Place Wire" (figure 1). From the tutorials, I understood that this should be used in most of the cases to connect equipments, control panels, etc. I also saw that there was a symbol of insert cable for schematic drawing (figure 1 and 2). At first, I thought that if I placed this symbol over the wire, it would make the software understand it as a cable.

PROBLEM I'M FACING:

So, with that I continued to explore the software and realizes I could export the connections between wires in the run reports tool. But, what I keep finding is that the software keeps exporting to the list o wire connections, what is cable.

For example:

Figure 3 below shows the connection between a Current Transformer and its connection box (ex. TCP-A to CLTC-4-P-RX). As you can see, I draw wires between them and assigned the cable symbol over it (figure 2).

Figure 3 - Connection in the Current Transformer

The problem is, when I use the Run Reports to Wire List, it keeps showing me those connections which should be cables (figure 4). So, I assumed I did something wrong.

My question is: How do I treat the cables? I should create just a smartline and assign over it the cable symbol for schematic drawing (figure 2)? The Wire tool is exclusively for wires, correct? Or there's something in the mode of the wires (figure 1) which could change that (General_Wires, 3Phase, Control_LV, etc.)?

  • Hi Matheus,

The Place / Draw wire are used to draw smart wire which can connect to different equipments, control panels, wire link. The Insert Cable command is used Place cable symbol on Wire to which will assign it to a cable according to the Cable Family specified and the conductor selected after selecting a family.

Regarding this issue, after reviewing your screenshots it seems that you have not assigned wire numbers to the wires in your project. And the details provided in the report are referring to the route of wire from source Device Id to Target Device Id.

You use cables to assign them the Cable Family and the respective Conductor for the family. Yes after you draw the smart line you assign it with a Cable Symbol which will link it to a family and conductor in the family.

You, Draw / Place Wire is exclusively for placing smart wire on your schematics. You can also select the Wire level before drawing the wire, selecting the level of wire is according to your requirement and circuit your drawing.

  • Hi Satish,

Thank you so much for you help. I did what you said with the families and cable. That's fine. And yeah, I really did not assign wire numbers to the wires in my project.

So, just to be sure, in my Figure 3 (connection between a Current Transformer and its connection box), I should NOT have added a wire over there, is that correct? And, instead of the wires, it should be just a SmartLine with the Cable Symbol?
