Installing promis.e V8i would not affect promis.e 5.05 unless you told it to install to the same path as 5.05 during installation. By default, the installation paths for promis.e V8i and promis.e 5.05 are different. Also, promis.e V8i would not update your promis.e 5.05 data automatically. When you do convert your data (see Migration Wizard in promis-e Help > Help), the original data is not overwritten.
So unless you have uninstalled promis.e 5.05 you should still be able to use it.
Did you migrate a legacy project into promis.e V8i?
Why were you doing a Save As?
All our drawings were created using version 5.05. I recently installed version 8 because I am enrolled in the online training course this week. I wanted to do a "save as" to load a drawing stored on my network drive to my local drive so that I could try the utlily to import the drawing into version 8.
When I ran version 5.05 and opend a drawing, it seemed to crash when I wen to do a "save as". The second time that I tried it, I noticed that the graphic in the dialog box was from version 8..

A complete project in promis.e consists of not just the dwg drawing, but also all the proper database information that goes along with it. Doing a CAD saveas command would have no good effect on your project and could in fact stop it from functioning in promis.e if you renamed or moved the drawing from its proper folder. It certainly does not make any kind of useful drawing to convert to a new promis.e version. If you want to "move" a project to a new folder in the 5.06 version, then you have to redirect the work path in the setup dialog. One limitation of that older version was that all projects had to reside in one project folder, and it could not look in more than one folder at a time. The new V8i version does not have that limitation. So to move a project in the 5.06 version, you should do a project backup, then create a new project\work folder in the desired location. Then you can change the work path in the tools>system settings>system paths and point it to that new project folder. (do not browse all the way to the work folder or it will not work properly, stop at project). Then you can restore the backup while pointing at that new folder. If you have many projects in your existing work folder, you can also use windows to copy the entire project\work folder to a new location and then change the setup path.
To convert old projects into V8i, you would need to run them through the migration wizard in V8i. You can convert either raw project folders as they normally exist, or you can convert project backups. So, for just he purpose of migration, you would not need to do all the above. You could just make a backup of the project from 5.06 saved locally, and then point to it in the migration wizard. You can get the the migration wizard through the project manager in V8i. If there are errors opening the project in 5.06, then you probably will not get a good conversion.
I believe that you were correct. I could not get past the "save as "dialog box without a crash. My first instinct was to use AutoCad commands instead of using the Promise v5.05 back up utlilty. That was my initial frustration with using Promise in that there were some native AutoCad commands that did not work.
I am glad to see that this issue has been resolved in the latest release. Thanks for your help
