seed files for documentation

i know this may sound like a stupid question but I've noticed that the company I'm working for at the moment has all their documentation
pointing to 3D seed files...even schematics.

i would have thought that a 2D seed file would be the best practise, for normal documentation
i.e. (schematics , wiring diagrams , single lines etc) but what I'm essentially asking is
is this likely to cause any significant issues ?

If so , is there an easy way to convert the documentation back to 2D ,  or is it a case of change it
now and future docs should be correct.

i think we may have avoided any issues up to now, but it would be good to know what best practise is
so i can suggest a change going forward if that is deemed to be correct practise.

many thanks
