    Clean Installation

      Product(s): Promis.e, Bentley Substation
      Version(s): through 08.11.13.140
      Environment: N\A
      Area: Installation_Configuration
      Subarea: N\A

    Background

Some problems are not resolved by uninstalling the software but are resolved by performing a "clean install". This article describes how to perform a clean install.

In this article "the software" means Promis.e and Bentley Substation. The "Data folder" refers to the Promise Data folder and the Substation Data folder.

    Steps to Accomplish

    1. Backup Your Data. Make backups of critical projects.
    2. Move or copy custom DGNLIB files, custom plug-ins, and any other files that are always on the workstation regardless of local vs. network configuration, to a temporary location such as the Desktop.
    3. Uninstall the software using Windows' Control Panel > Programs and Features (Windows 8.1 & Windows 7) or Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP).
    4. If the software uses a local Data folder, move it to a temporary location such as the Desktop.
    5. Delete the following folders if they remain:
      Promis.e:
      • Program folder - Promis.e This folder may contain custom plug-in data, back up such data first.
      • Program data folder - Promis.e This folder can contain the promis-e Data folder, back up the promis-e Data folder first.
      • C:\ProgramData\Bentley\promise V8i\WorkSpace This folder may contain custom DGNLIB files, back up such files first.
      • Application Data (per-user configuration) - Promis.e

      Bentley Substation:
      • Program Folder - Substation This folder may contain custom plug-in data, back up such data first.
      • Program data folder - Substation This folder can contain the Substation Data folder, backup the Substation Data folder first. This folder may contain custom DGNLIB files, back up such files first.
      • Application Data (per-user configuration) - Substation
    6. (Optional, use at own risk) Use third-party registry cleaner to remove registry keys related to the software. Opt to only remove registry keys related to the software, if possible.

    7. Reinstall the software.

    8. Verify the issue is resolved.

    9. If the software is to use a local Data folder, move the backed up data (step 1) back into place. If the data is suspected, consider moving it into place one part at a time, or in sections, if applicable, to identify which file is the problem.

    10. Verify the issue remains resolved.
