How to assign part numbers to a symbol in Create Symbol? How to assign multiple quantities of a part number to a symbol in Create Symbol?
Part numbers are often assigned to a device during symbol placement. It is also possible to assign part numbers to a symbol in Create Symbol so that whenever the symbol is inserted onto a page, the part numbers will automatically be assigned to the device.
This may be appropriate for some cases but may limit the usefulness of the symbol. It must be decided whether it is more advantageous to have part numbers automatically assigned when placing the symbol than to keep the symbol in a more generic state and "manually" assign different part numbers in different situations during or after symbol placement. Any part numbers automatically assigned to the device could be removed after the symbol is inserted and different part numbers selected.
This document uses the example of assigning a quantity 100 of part number ABC, a quantity of 25 of part DEF, and a quantity of 1 of part XYZ.
In Create Symbol, go to the Specify Attributes step.
On the Standard Attributes tab, not the Part Database Attributes tab, find the PartNumber" attribute.
In the Default Value column, specify "[100]ABC,[25]DEF,XYZ" without the quotes and without any spaces. The square brackets are delimiters for quantity as specified in Options > Project Options > Part Number Settings. Note that no bracketed quantity is specified for part XYZ since the desired quantity is 1 in this example.
Save the symbol and test it by inserting it in a new project.
Note: If modifying an existing symbol where the PartNumber attribute is already placed, it is possible to modify its default value using Attribute Editor instead of reinserting it. To update existing projects with the new symbol definition, use Update Symbol or Terminal/Pin-Plug Manager.
