    Windows Vista and promis.e

      Product(s): promis.e
      Version(s): 3.0.3 - 08.11.08.xx
      Environment: N/A
      Area: OS Support
      Subarea: N/A

What do I need to do to make promis.e run on Windows Vista?

    Background

This article was written when Windows Vista was first released.  Since then, recent versions of promis.e are not certified on Windows Vista.  The intent of this article is not make promis.e run on operating systems on which it was not certified.  Verify that the version of promis.e, the CAD platform, and Windows are compatible. See the Compatibility Chart.

    Steps to Accomplish

After installation, promis.e must first be run once under an Administrator login to register the API. To run promis.e the first time, right-click the promis.e desktop shortcut icon and select Run As Administrator. If this is not done it may cause:

    • A prompt of "Would you like to open this file read-only" in the AutoCAD command line followed by errors, and possibly other issues. The message "System unauthorized to access C:\Program Files\ECT\promis-e\ExecuteDll.dll" in MicroStation or MicroStation PowerDraft

    • Windows becoming unresponsive when promis.e is run, such as when the License Manager appears.

    • Various other issues

promis.e can run on Vista under a user login. As administrator, grant the user Modify privileges to the promis-e Data folder and Program folder.

Disable the "Use Visual Styles On Windows and Buttons" performance option.  If this is not done the mouse cursor movement may be slow in the drawing area.  This setting is in System Properties > Advanced System Settings > Performance > Settings.  (Note: the Windows key + Pause/Break is a shortcut to System Properties.)

If using promis.e for AutoCAD on Windows Vista, make sure the AutoCAD settings for Acceleration are set to "Software Acceleration" using the 3DCONFIG command.  If it is set to "Hardware Acceleration", drawing on a page, such as inserting a symbol or drawing a wire, will result in the Title Block and all other contents on the page disappearing. If the page is reopened, the new item plus the old ones will be on the page, so this is a display issue.  Check the help files for the AutoCAD version being used for exact information on the AutoCAD 3DCONFIG command.
