Error - Database version does not match the application

      Product(s): Promis.e, Bentley Substation
      Version(s): through 08.11.13.140
      Environment: N/A
      Area: Database Platform Support
      Subarea: N/A

    Error or Warning Message

    Warning
The database version does not match the application.  The version of the application is 'x.x.xx', but version of database is 'y.y.yy'.

    Or

    Database Version
Your database version [x.x.xx] does not match the application version [y.y.yy], would you like to upgrade your database?

    Or similar message is displayed.

In Project Manager, project icons are grayed out or have a red circle-slash symbol on them and the projects have no pages listed.

    Explanation

Each version of Promis.e and Bentley Substation (referred as "the software" for the remainder of this document) has its own corresponding project database schema, identified by a version number. The version number of the database is stored as an extended property of the Project table in SQL Server databases, and as a comment on the Project table for Oracle databases.

    The error message occurs:

    • When the version value read from the database is different than expected.
    • When the "Version" property/comment does not exist.  In this case the version of the database will be blank in the error message.
    • When the version value cannot be read for whatever reason.  In this case the version of the database will be blank in the error message.

The version property can be of the database can be verified using the process described in Error - No version resource could be located in database.

    How to Avoid

See the Project Database Version - Promis.e or Project Database Version - Substation article to see which database schema versions are compatible with which application versions. Update the application or the database schema, whichever is older according to these articles.

    • If the application needs to be updated, see the Updating and Upgrading Promis.e or Updating and Upgrading Bentley Substation article.
    • If the database schema needs to be updated, see the Creating and Updating the Project Database article.
    • If the database schema version number correctly corresponds to the application version, check for causes preventing the software from connecting to the database or reading properties/comments of the Project table in the database. These causes can include login permissions and the status of the database (SUSPECT, OFFLINE, etc.).

Compressed database files have also caused this type of error message. SQL databases cannot operate if they are compressed.
