More memory almost always improves performance, particularly when working with larger models. Video See the graphics card manufacturer for latest information on DirectX drivers. 512 MB of video RAM or higher is recommended. If insufficient video RAM or no graphics card supported by DirectX can be found, OpenBridge attempts to use software emulation. For optimal performance, graphics display color depth should be set to 24-bit or higher. When using a color depth setting of 16-bit, some inconsistencies will be noted. SHARING CONFIGURATIONS AND PROJECT DATA When you’re working remotely, you are still part of a team and therefore sharing of project data is crucial. This is where the Configuration system shines. No matter where you are, you can be sure to be using the correct CAD standard with server-based Configurations. If your system has already been configured to use server-based resources virtualization and remote desktop access results in a similar experience to working in the office, there may be some graphic latency, but the system will be identical. Attempting to connect to a configuration on office-based shares via VPN may be possible, depending on your IT systems, but is likely to be subject to significant latency, especially with many more VPN users than usual. Working with a local copy of the network configuration may be more appropriate. Common Network Storage One of the simplest and effective ways of work sharing is by storing the project data in a common network location and pointing every user’s configuration to that location by setting the OpenBridge _USTN_CONFIGURATION configuration variable. In addition, we recommend mapping a drive letter to organization’s network server path. On the whole it works very well except when multi user access is required. As there are multiple local sync'd versions if Alice and Bob both open the same file and make changes multiple versions will be saved to the sources in the format - .dgn, .dgnws, etc. While SharePoint/Microsoft 365/OneDrive support multiuser access to Office file formats, this is not an option for DGN and supporting files. This is one of the issues that ProjectWise Drive was designed to resolve. ProjectWise Drive supports transparent check in/out to enforce single-user file access. It also understands the Bentley configuration system so if a configuration is stored in ProjectWise Drive it will locally sync configuration files as the applications demand them. The paths can be different for different users within the same organization. If you decide to forge ahead with OneDrive use the OneDrive variable, not %USERPROFILE%. With OneDrive you have three Windows variables to work with: %OneDrive%, %OneDriveCommercial%, %OneDriveConsumer%. If all users use the Drive access they would not need to use the regular ProjectWise explorer. However management, access controls, etc... would still be set via ProjectWise administrator tools. ProjectWise Managed workspaces are not available when opening files from Drive (but you can have a regular workspace in Drive and access that via normal set of config files. ProjectWise 365 also has a Share component, this can be used to store and share files in a Project, however the files are not available via Drive and this is not intended for CADD files. It has no workspace mechanism at all. Office documents in Share can be used with Microsoft 365 to offer collaboration on Office documents. I've not done this though. These methods of storage are being used to both store and modify files. While the convenience of being able to edit a drawing file from any location that has an internet connection; opening these files directly stored in these locations have at times caused problems with consistency of data in MicroStation and other Bentley products and have even caused these programs to crash. What is Bentley's recommendation? Solution MicroStation is enabled to work with cloud-based storage repositories for the exchange of drawing files. ProjectWise 365 / ProjectWise Drive is the preferred (and certified) file exchange service for Bentley desktop products. There has been some light testing of the following applications but do not officially “certify” these applications. Bentley Systems is not responsible for any loss of data accessed from these locations. The following should be used at your own risk: Google Drive SharePoint Dropbox Azure Cloud Service OneDrive Bentley does understand that these cloud-based storage repositories are in use by some of our users. However, due to reasons beyond our control, we cannot certify these cloud-based storage repositories in the foreseeable future.
