How to display references in a different color to the active/live elements

Background

When working in a file that has a number of references attached, it would be useful to display the references in a different color so that they are recognisable as references at a glance

Steps to Accomplish

Option 1

  1. In the master file, open the Level Manager
  2. On the left hand side, expand the tree under the master file name
  3. Select one of the references - the levels for that reference should display in the main section
  4. Change the Symbology toggle from 'ByLevel' to 'Overrides'
  5. Select all the levels in the reference file (left click once on the first level name and hold down the button while dragging down to select multiple levels)
  6. Click in the Color column for one of the levels and select the desired color to display the references
  7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for any additional references
  8. Open the References dialog
  9. Select a reference and click on the Presentation button (or right click and choose Presenatation)
  10. In the Presentation dialog, turn on the 'Use View Flags' option, enable the Level Overrides toggle and click on OK to apply - the reference elements should change color
  11. Repeat steps 9 and 10 for any additional references
  12. See video below showing this process

Option 2

  1. In the master file, open the Level Manager
  2. On the left hand side, expand the tree under the master file name
  3. Select one of the references - the levels for that reference should display in the main section
  4. Ensure the Symbology toggle is set to 'ByLevel'
  5. Select all the levels in the reference file (left click once on the first level name and hold down the button while dragging down to select multiple levels)
  6. Click in the Color column for one of the levels and select the desired color to display the references
  7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for any additional references - the references should display in a different color

Note: Option 2 will only work if the reference elements have been placed with ByLevel Attributes in the reference file itself

Note: The Key-in: set refleveloverrides on    needs to be set for either option to work
